YOUR REDEEMER IS GRACIOUS
By Bishop Mike Okonkwo

“For the LORD God is a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.” – Psalms 84:11 (KJV)

Beloved, today’s scripture reveals a powerful truth about the gracious nature of our God. He not only gives grace and glory, but promises not to withhold any good thing from those who walk uprightly. This brings us back to the story of Ruth, a young, widowed, and seemingly powerless woman who followed her mother-in-law Naomi to Bethlehem-Judah. Ruth had no connections, no resources, and no assurances. Yet she made a bold and faith-filled declaration: “…Intreat me not to leave thee… for whither thou goest, I will go… thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God.” – Ruth 1:16 (KJV)

Ruth had encountered the God of Israel through Naomi, and that was enough for her. She prioritized God above her past, her comfort, and even her personal plans. When they arrived in Bethlehem, Ruth found herself gleaning in the field of Boaz, a wealthy and kind man who just happened to be a relative, a potential kinsman redeemer. Ruth found favour with him. When she returned and shared her experience, Naomi instructed her on what to do in accordance with the Jewish custom, telling her to present herself at the feet of Boaz.

This wasn’t an immoral act, as some misunderstand. According to tradition, lying at the feet of a kinsman was a symbolic and humble request for redemption. Ruth was essentially saying, “I cannot redeem myself, but you can.”

And Boaz said: “And now, my daughter, fear not; I will do to thee all that thou requirest: for all the city of my people doth know that thou art a virtuous woman.” – Ruth 3:11 (KJV)

Beloved, your Redeemer – Jesus is even more gracious. He doesn’t wait for you to qualify. His grace is unearned, undeserved, and freely given. Just like Ruth, when you lay at His feet in total dependence, He will exceed your expectations.
