LEADERSHIP IN THE HOME
Dr. Mike Okonkwo

“Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6 (KJV)

Leadership actually starts in the home. We are all products of one family heritage or the other. Good family values actually give a child a good head start in life. A child who experiences love in the home is a lot more confident and is able to face challenges as he grows up than a child who grows up in an abusive environment.

The time has come for parents to give attention to the children. Children today learn a lot faster than you can imagine. We have more child geniuses today than you know. The time to keep children ignorant is far gone. Ignorance is no more bliss. If you do not build the right values into them, someone else will.

Unfortunately, we are surrounded by predators not only for the girl child but for both boys and girls, so be vigilant. Be a friend to your children. Be accessible to them. When you correct them, correct in love. Don’t be a terror to them. Be their confidant. Know their friends and interact with them. Have a family culture. Let there be something your children look forward to when they come home. It is not about how expensive the activity is, it is about how much love you put into it. Be an expressive parent – express your love to them. When they make mistakes, correct them in love.

I am not an advocate of allowing children to do just anything they want. No! The Bible mandates you to train your child in the way he should go. The word ‘Train’ here connotes discipline; it implies teaching. It means you should guide them and to guide them, you must lead. Children learn more from what they see than what they hear. Let them see you get up a great while before day to pray. Let them see you studying the Bible. Let them see you doing the things you are teaching them and before long, you will see the values you desire in their lives.
