TOPIC: GOD IS LOOKING FOR THE HEART
“But Abimelech had not come near her: and he said, Lord, wilt thou slay also a righteous nation? Said he not unto me, She is my sister? and she, even she herself said, He is my brother: in the integrity of my heart and innocency of my hands have I done this.” – Genesis 20:4–5 (KJV)
Beloved, why did God still honor David despite his many flaws, mistakes, and moral failures? It was because of his heart. David wasn’t perfect, but his heart was right before God. God isn’t looking for perfection, He is looking for sincerity of heart.
Do you know that it’s possible for your heart to be right even when your actions are wrong? When this happens, God steps in to correct and realign you. That’s exactly what we see in the story of Abimelech. He had taken Sarah, Abraham’s wife, into his house, but he did not sleep with her. That wasn’t because of his personal restraint or moral strength. Scripture makes it clear that it was God who prevented him.
Abimelech defended himself before God, saying, “I did this in the integrity of my heart and innocence of my hands.” And God replied, “Yea, I know that thou didst this in the integrity of thy heart; for I also withheld thee from sinning against me: therefore suffered I thee not to touch her.” – Genesis 20:6 (KJV)
What a profound truth! God saw that Abimelech’s heart was pure, even though his actions could have led him into sin. Because his intentions were right, God intervened to protect him from falling.
Beloved, when your heart is right, God will preserve you. He will go to great lengths to protect you from error, temptation, and destruction. It wasn’t that Abimelech lacked desire, it was that God stepped in because his heart was sincere.
Your heart matters most above everything else. More than your performance, more than your record, God searches the heart. When He finds a heart that is pure, humble, and yielded, He releases mercy, guidance, and divine protection.
So, guard your heart. Keep it tender before God. Because when your heart is right, heaven will always back you up.
